Sharingain Longkumer, 37, was today elected unopposed and unanimously as the Deputy Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. Longkumer’s name was proposed by MLAs Dr. Longrineken and N. Bongkhao Konyak. Speaker Yhoshü declared Longkumer elected unopposed and conveyed his congratulations to the new Deputy Speaker.
Congratulating the newly elected deputy Speaker, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio described Longkumer as a young and dynamic with high experience as a legal practitioner. Rio expressed hope that with the responsibility placed on his shoulder, the newly appointed deputy speaker will execute his duties with impartiality and deliver justice to all.
Leader of opposition T.R. Zeliang in his congratulatory note said the opposition Naga People’s Front has decided to unanimously support the ruling government though in the past, the post of Deputy Speaker was offered to the opposition bench. Zeliang remarked that Longkumer, though a newcomer in the assembly, comes with experience and expressed confidence that the new deputy Speaker will discharge his duties with impartiality to the House.
Meanwhile, in his acceptance speech, Sharingain Longkumer, expressed gratitude to the House on being elected unopposed and accept the responsibility with solemn task and humility. Acknowledging that his duties could only be fulfilled with the cooperation of all the members, he therefore, appealed to all to extend their cooperation for peaceful and efficient transaction of businesses.
